Quartz vs. Quartzite - Your Countertop Questions Answered
One of the questions I’m asked most often by clients interested in a kitchen renovation is: which countertop should I choose?
Undoubtedly, clean white and neutral kitchens are here to stay, which means most homeowners are choosing between quartzite and quartz countertops. I have both materials in my home and all of my advice and recommendations come from personal experience. Quartz and quartzite sound so similar, so what is the difference? Let’s take a quick look.
Quartzite
Quartzite countertops are a natural stone that many homeowners love because it resembles marble, but without the hefty price tag. Quartzite comes in shades of white and gray with some pieces featuring pink, orange, or blue grain due to the minerals found in the stone. It’s a strong and durable stone, but anyone considering quartzite should be aware that it requires maintenance and care. Quartzite countertops must be sealed every 1-2 years to protect against stains and everyday wear and tear. Only clean quartzite with soap and water - harsh bleaches and chemicals will affect the finish. At the end of the day, quartzite offers a luxurious look and feel that can’t be beat.
Quartz
Quartz countertops are an engineered stone blend of pulverized quartz or other natural stone like granite and marble with a polymer resin mix. This makes quartz counters nearly indestructible! They are nonporous, resistant to stains, heat and scratches and require no annual sealing or special treatment. They are easy to clean - a simple mix of dish soap and water will do. Quartz countertops are available in a wide variety of colors and patterns, offering more choice than natural stone. They are also more budget-friendly, making them a popular choice among homeowners.
Choosing the Right Countertop for You
So which type of countertop is right for you? In my opinion, it all comes down to your lifestyle, budget and personal style. If you are looking for a low-maintenance option due to a busy life OR if you spend a lot of time cooking in your kitchen, quartz countertops are the better choice due to their durability and easy maintenance. However, if you’re willing to put in the extra effort for a stunning and luxurious look, quartzite countertops are the right choice for you.
